Who needs it?

Fuller lips are often perceived as a symbol of youth, health, and sexual vitality. In some cases, thin lips may be a family trait, but thinning of the lips occurs in all people with advancing age. As lips lose fullness, the corners of the mouth also tend to sag giving a sad appearance to the face. Some patients with very thin lips need to have a more normal appearance and for other patients, very thick lips are the goal. Other desire a defined edge to the lip or a return to their less aged lip.

Cosmetic lip augmentation consists of the enlargement and reshaping of lips to improve their dimensional relation with the nose, teeth, and surrounding facial structures. It can involve surgical or non-surgical procedures: non-surgical procedures can include injecting dermal fillers or even your own fat cells into the lips while lip surgery involves placing implants into the lips for longer lasting results. Some people prefer a temporary approach in case they change their minds about the new look later.

Ideal candidates for a lip augmentation

Adults of nearly any age may be good candidates for lip augmentation. Anyone who undergoes lip augmentation should be in good health and have reasonable expectations about the outcome that can be achieved. Your surgeon can discuss the pros and cons of your lip augmentation options and help you decide which technique is best for you.

You may not be a candidate for lip augmentation if you have an active infection such as oral herpes, diabetes, lupus or blood-clotting problems.

What you should know

If you have ever had a cold sore (oral herpes) any time in the past, you should tell your doctor before undergoing the procedure. You should tell him or her of any allergies (especially if you are allergic to lidocaine) or any medications that you are taking. Certain diseases such as diabetes can increase your chances of complications. If you are a smoker, this may also be a complicating factor.

Lip injections vs lip implants

Temporary lip enhancement can be achieved by injecting substances into the lip. The most common fillers today are products that contain substances similar to hyaluronic acid (hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in the body). These types of dermal fillers are sometimes called hyaluronic acid fillers. Collagen, once the most common dermal filler, is used less often today. The newer options are safer and the effects last longer.

Hyaluronic acid fillers can improve the appearance of your lips by adding shape, structure and volume. The effects typically last around six months and after that period more injections are needed to keep the volume and shape of your lips.

Fat injections and implants are other methods to plump lips. Lip implants typically last longer than fillers and are able to produce a more predictable amount of augmentation. Lip implants can provide permanent lip augmentation with more refined results than dermal lip fillers, making them a good option for individuals with very thin lips or for people who desire fuller, plumper lips and who don’t want to return every couple of months for top-up injections.

The procedure

The technique used for lip augmentation will depend on the exact procedure chosen. Having fillers injected into the lips is much less complicated than having implants inserted. Injectable fillers can be administered in only a few minutes while implants can require the use of local anesthesia and can take longer since incisions will need to be made.

The surgeon will most likely use topical anesthesia (painkiller applied directly to the lips) for injections or you will receive local anesthesia if you get a lip implant or have lip augmentation surgery. Sometimes, nerve block injections can be given before the treatment to completely numb the lips (this is similar to the anesthetic injections that you get at the dentist to numb your mouth). Rarely IV sedation is required.

Lip augmentation with injectable lip fillers provides pleasing results in as little as 30 minutes. Lip surgery is relatively simple and usually takes about an hour to complete, but implants typically require a few days of recovery since there will be a moderate amount of lip swelling for the first 2-3 days for most patients.

Side effects and risks

Side effects of hyaluronic acid fillers are temporary and should only last a few days. They may include bleeding from the injection sites, swelling and bruising, redness and tenderness at the site of the injection and reactivation of cold sores or fever blisters (herpes simplex).

Compared with other cosmetic surgeries, the risk of complications from lip implant surgery is relatively low. Some of the risks associated with permanent lip augmentation may include implant rejection, infection, implant migration or scarring. These risks can be greatly reduced by choosing an experienced surgeon to perform your lip implant procedure.

Lip augmentation surgery cost (price)

The cost of lip augmentation varies depending on the type of procedure performed, surgeon’s experience and geographical location. Lip fillers cost is usually based priced per syringe injected (the cost will depend on how much material is required for the chosen procedure) – most people don't need more than one to two syringes.
